PDA Resources
As I am a Pocket PC aficionado, I will start with resources for those devices. But, I know many people get great use out of their Palms, so I will include links for those as well. But this will not stop me in my mission to convert you to the devices of enlightenment and power.
Pocket PC Oriented Websites
One very refreshing fact...most of these sites are maintained not by some marketing-type person who was just hired to write for the site, but instead by someone who knows and loves the technology. (However, I will point out that the Microsoft marketing-type people also know and love their technology.)
Pocket PC Thoughts (www.pocketpcthoughts.com) Jason Dunn's excellent - and opinionated - website on all things relating to Pocket PC. Jason has been named a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) for Windows CE. Jason also operates Kensai Design and Communications in Calgary, Alberta, as well as writing for PocketPC.com, the Microsoft website.
Pocket PC Passion (www.pocketpcpassion.com) Dale Coffing, the "Pocket PC Pastor," operates this website. It started as a fan website but is now one of the premier resources for Pocket PC information on the web. As a result, Dale has become the premier consulting evangelist for the Pocket PC for Microsoft! Dale was profiled in the June 2001 issue of Wired Magazine. (See "Handheld of God.") Dale also writes articles for PocketPC.com and is actively involved in the Albuquerque Pocket PC Users Group. Dale was also recently named an MS-MVP for Mobile Devices.
Flashenabled.com (www.flashenabled.com/mobile) Phillip Torrone, the master of Flash on mobile devices (and on just about everything else; I mean, if there was a Flash-enabled coffee maker, Phillip would have it!) has this great website detailing all the news about Flash, and all kinds of really cool stuff. Phillip's site is a complete blast!
CEWindows.net (www.cewindows.net) Chris De Herrera, also a MS-MVP/CE, has the most complete collection of FAQs, tips and tricks at this website. I pretty much just open up a window to it whenever I'm trying something new because I know if I screw it up, Chris' site will help me fix it! This man is the CE guru.
PocketPC.com (www.pocketpc.com) The official Microsoft website, has a great deal of information relating to Pocket PCs. One of the best features are the articles detailing how Pocket PCs can be used in facets of everyday life. Most articles are written by users of the technology, not necessarily Microsoft employees.
Pocket PC Buyer's Guide (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/hardware/default.asp) Again, Microsoft (are they involved in this somehow?) has a great resource to help you pick the right Pocket PC!
Pocket PC Users' Groups
Since this is tesseract/seattle, I suppose a shameless plug for the local users' group is in order...
The Puget Sound Handheld Users Group (PSHUG) (http://www.pshug.org) meets monthly in Bldg. 117 (the Mobile Devices building) on the Microsoft campus in Redmond. While we're a Pocket PC leaning group, anyone is welcome to come! (Actually, we love Palm users, or Psion users or whatever: we want to show you what you're missing!) For more information, visit our website or email me. Directions to the Mobile Devices building are here. Check out our new site at MaximumPDA.com (thanks to Bill Landon!) here.
Pocket PC User Group Links (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/club/usrgroups.asp) Microsoft maintains a list of local user groups at this site. Join up, see the world...er, at least the world of Pocket PCs! Your local user group is a great resource!
My apologies to anyone I've missed...email me and I'll fix it! (Subject to evaluation by The Governing Board of tesseract/seattle, of course.)
Somewhat More Balanced Coverage
MaximumPDA (www.maximumpda.com) Bill Landon's very cool site (and Bill's our local guy and the kind builder and host of the new PSHUG website) about all kinds of PDA stuff and technology news.
BrightHand (www.brighthand.com) Steve Bush's well-respected website covers all facets of handheld computing. Some feel he leans a bit toward Palm, but I'll leave that up to you, the gentle reader. However, lots of good information for fans of both platforms.
PDA Buzz (www.pdabuzz.com) Wes Salmon's excellent site on all things PDA. He even gives you an opportunity to vote for your favorite device!
Geek.com (www.geek.com) 'Chief Geek' Joel Evans and crew cover a lot more than just PDAs, but cover them they do...also, if you're just interested in geeky things, this is a great place to be!
Smaller.com (www.smaller.com) Nicely balanced coverage of PDAs and all things, well, smaller!
Palm OS Oriented Websites
I apologize in advance for my bias toward Pocket PCs in the following comments. Thank you. ;-)
Palm Computing (www.palm.com) Small, tiny devices that don't do as much as Pocket PCs. Okay if you're in the market to spend $130-200; but for Gosh sakes, if you're going to spend more, at least LOOK at a Pocket PC!
Handspring (www.handspring.com) Makers of the popular Visor handhelds. Run by Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, de-facto leaders of the handheld movement, and much more innovative thinkers than the people who are running Palm these days. They left Palm when it appeared that there wasn't going to be an IPO spin-off from 3COM; then of course, Palm was spun off! However, they still run the Palm OS. Same comments on price apply to Handspring as they do to Palm.
